Brysis swam up to the stable master, a short sea elf who wore a perpetual frown. He watched her warily, obviously sensing her hostility.

Good, Brysis thought.

“Minnow-Tyrant!” Brysis said, “What’s happening to him?”

“Happening?” the stable master said, one eyebrow raised.

“Did anyone touch him? Scar him?” she demanded.

“No,” he said, his frown deepening. “He’s grown ill, that’s all.”

“Then why are there fresh scars on his body?”

The frown faded, and the stable master sneered. “Impossible,” he said. “Minnow-Tyrant is a Royal Dolphin. And he’s feted. Nobody would dare touch him. That’s against the law.”

“And yet the outline of the World Gash is growing.”

The stable master blanched. “Impossible,” he said.

“No,” Brysis yelled. “I treated his scars when Veloxua first mapped him. I was there! The lines were never that thick!”

The stable master open and closed his mouth, until finally he said grudgingly, “The royal cartographers sent to copy the map said the same thing.”

“How would they know about the scar?” Brysis said, almost yelling.

“Not about the scar,” the stable master said. “About their maps. They returned several times to copy the maps. But they said whenever they tried drawing the World Gash, their ink-jelly bled into the parchment. They’ve been unable to map the World Gash.”

Brysis felt the blood drain from her face and limbs. Were the lines indeed shifting and growing? Was that a reflection that the World Gash itself was expanding?
